These norms help teams have honest conversations, build internal alignment and promote a sense of ownership.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember412\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Nope, we didn\u2019t come up with these norms. These norms are the outcome of Dr. <strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a id=\"ember413\" class=\"ember-view\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.forbes.com\/sites\/rodgerdeanduncan\/2025\/08\/21\/why-team-culture-beats-talent-vanessa-druskat-on-the-power-of-group-eq\/\">Vanessa Druskat<\/a>&#8216;<\/span><\/strong>s three decades of work in studying what separates high-performing teams from other teams.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember414\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">She found patterns of behaviour that, when practised consistently, create the emotional and psychological conditions for a team to do its best work together.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember415\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">She divided them into 9 norms. And know exactly where to <em>start.<\/em><\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"THE_FOUNDATION_%E2%80%93_how_we_help_one_another_succeed\"><\/span>THE FOUNDATION &#8211; how we help one another succeed<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"ember417\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>Norm 1 &#8211; Understand team members <\/strong><em>(Learn the talents, motivations and preferences of each person)<\/em><\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember418\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">A researcher asked her MBA students to visit each other&#8217;s homes.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember419\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">When the group visited their Chinese classmate&#8217;s place, there was no furniture. He pulled out a photo of his wife and child back home. People he wouldn&#8217;t see for two years.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember420\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">That one visit made a huge impact on the classmates. His silence in class, which everyone had read as disinterest, had a new meaning.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember421\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Understanding your colleagues&#8217; world gives you a window into why they behave so \u2018frustratingly\u2019 different from you.\ud83d\ude2c<\/p>\n<hr class=\"reader-divider-block__horizontal-rule\" \/>\n<h3 id=\"ember422\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>Norm 2 &#8211; Demonstrate Caring <\/strong><em>(Tell your colleagues the value they bring to the team)<\/em><\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember423\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">An engineer was struggling to explain the root cause of a problem to her team. A colleague stood up, walked to the board and drew a diagram. The team immediately understood. The meeting moved forward.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember424\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">But no one said a word to the person who had helped.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember425\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Later, when Vanessa acknowledged her, she replied:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><em>&#8220;Are you sure? I thought it took up time we could have used in our discussion.&#8221;<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"ember427\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">In team settings, our brains constantly scan for two signals:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Am I valued here as a person?<\/li>\n<li>Does my contribution actually matter?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p id=\"ember429\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Every time you appreciate a colleague specifically and out loud, you answer both questions.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"reader-divider-block__horizontal-rule\" \/>\n<h3 id=\"ember430\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>Norm 3 &#8211; Address Unacceptable Behaviour<\/strong> <em>(Make feedback a gift)<\/em><\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember431\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\"><a id=\"ember432\" class=\"ember-view\" style=\"color: #0000ff;\" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=vmxHUiiHgNk\">Kim Scott<\/a><\/span><\/strong>, author of Radical Candor, once had a team member who was well-liked but underperforming. She avoided the conversation. She kept the peace and hoped things would improve. Eventually she had to let him go.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember433\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">When she did, he was devastated. What hurt him the most was that he thought they all cared about him.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember434\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">When unacceptable behaviour goes unaddressed, two things happen:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The person never gets the chance to grow.<\/li>\n<li>The rest of the team quietly loses trust.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2857 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/victuspeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Activities-for-building-trust-an-dpsychological-safety-in-teams_Victus-People-1500x844.jpg\" alt=\"Victus People_Activities for building high performing teams\" width=\"1020\" height=\"574\" \/><\/p>\n<h2><\/h2>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"THE_RHYTHM_%E2%80%93_how_we_learn_and_advance_together\"><\/span>THE RHYTHM &#8211; how we learn and advance together<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"ember437\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>Norm 4 &#8211; Review the team <\/strong><em>(Routinely evaluate where team is thriving and where team is struggling)<\/em><\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember438\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Regular reflection is how high-performing teams stay sharp. Most teams don&#8217;t do it.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember439\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Military units have made debriefing a standard discipline for over 50 years. NASA astronauts spend an entire month reflecting after each mission. Surgical and emergency room teams review after every critical procedure.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember440\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">They all arrived at the same conclusion. You do not improve by doing more. You improve by stopping to understand what you have already done.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"reader-divider-block__horizontal-rule\" \/>\n<h3 id=\"ember441\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>Norm 5 &#8211; Support expression<\/strong> <em>(Create rituals to have honest conversations) <\/em><\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember442\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Steve Jobs described the best creative teams as rocks in a tumbler. Thrown together, knocking against each other, uncomfortable. It\u2019s the friction that polishes them.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember443\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Creating the conditions where people feel safe enough to say what they actually think is extremely crucial for the team\u2019s success.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember444\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Because a team where everyone agrees all the time isn&#8217;t a high-performing team. It&#8217;s a team where people have stopped being honest.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"reader-divider-block__horizontal-rule\" \/>\n<h3 id=\"ember445\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>Norms 6 &#8211; Build optimism<\/strong> <em>(Practice for building team resilience)<\/em><\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember446\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Before a big presentation, a team member opened her laptop to find a post-it note on the screen. It read:<\/p>\n<blockquote id=\"ember447\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__blockquote\"><p>&#8220;Remember, we rock.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p id=\"ember448\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The team member later said it changed how she walked into that room.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember449\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Our brains are naturally wired for pessimism. That instinct kept our ancestors alive. But in a team setting, it tends to work against us.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember450\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">When negative thoughts take hold, we become less attentive, less creative and more likely to withdraw from the people around us.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember451\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The good news is that optimism isn&#8217;t a personality trait that only some people have. It can be built. And it can be practised.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"reader-divider-block__horizontal-rule\" \/>\n<h3 id=\"ember452\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>Norm 7<\/strong> &#8211; <strong>Solve problems proactively <\/strong><em>(How you stay ahead of the problems)<\/em><\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember453\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">In 2003, engineers on the NASA Columbia mission raised concerns that a tile had broken off the shuttle during launch. They believed it could potentially be repaired in flight.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember454\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Management assessed the risk as low and decided not to act. When the shuttle re-entered Earth&#8217;s atmosphere, it broke apart.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember455\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">In many organisations, asking for help before something goes wrong is associated with not being competent enough to handle it yourself. So people wait. They sit with uncertainty, push forward without the input they need, and hope things work out.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember456\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><a class=\"SubfojZeMOTfJToTUaxMJjsVCyKMVY \" tabindex=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/pixar\/?hl=en\" data-test-app-aware-link=\"\"><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">Pixar Animation Studios<\/span><\/strong><\/a> built something called the <strong>Brain Trust<\/strong>, where directors invite leaders from across functions to review a project in progress. The more diverse the group, the richer the thinking.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember457\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The goal is to surface problems and blind spots while there is still time to address them.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-2855 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/victuspeople.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/Activities-for-building-high-performing-teams_Victus-People-1500x844.jpg\" alt=\"Victus People activities for building high performing teams\" width=\"1020\" height=\"574\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"THE_SYSTEM_%E2%80%93_how_we_engage_our_stakeholders\"><\/span>THE SYSTEM &#8211; how we engage our stakeholders<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n<h3 id=\"ember459\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>Norm 8 &#8211; Understand Team Context <\/strong><em>(How you grow organisational awareness)<\/em><\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember460\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Every team exists inside a larger system. Understanding that system helps teams understand the world around them.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember461\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Two questions sit at the heart of this norm.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Why does this team exist?<\/li>\n<li>And how does what it does actually contribute to something larger?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p id=\"ember463\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">When team members can answer those questions clearly and personally, it connects their everyday work to a larger sense of meaning.<\/p>\n<hr class=\"reader-divider-block__horizontal-rule\" \/>\n<h3 id=\"ember464\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\"><strong>Norm 9. Build External Relationships <\/strong><em>(how you stay connected and learn from the people who matter)<\/em><\/h3>\n<p id=\"ember465\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">A study of 100 top-performing leaders found that they spent almost 60 percent of their time reaching out to people outside their immediate team.<\/p>\n<p id=\"ember466\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">High-performing teams are not islands. They actively maintain relationships with stakeholders across the organisation and beyond.
