Rethinking Work Culture: What Leaders Need to Know

Multigenerational collaboration

New Generation, New Culture, New Working Style

When we met with a regional director of a global company recently to discuss the expectations for a workshop, their words struck a chord. With a thoughtful smile, they said,

“We just want them to learn about themselves and who they are.”

This simple yet profound statement captures a seismic shift in workplace culture. Today’s workforce, driven by the new generation, doesn’t think or prioritize the same way as previous ones. Their focus isn’t just on climbing the corporate ladder

-> it’s about personal growth, meaningful collaboration, and holistic well-being.

A Shift in Priorities

Unlike generations before, such as Millennials (Born 1981–1996) or Gen X (Born 1965–1980), Gen Z (Born 1997–2012), the youngest and fastest-growing workforce group, prioritizes self-awareness and personal development over traditional motivators like salary or job titles. They ask questions like:

  • How does this role help me grow?
  • What can I learn from my team?
  • Will this job allow me to balance my professional goals with my personal well-being?

This generation values learning and growth, not just in technical skills but in emotional intelligence, team dynamics, and self-awareness. They seek purpose, authenticity, and connection not just within the work they do but with the people they work alongside.

Look at an interesting the statistic below collecting data of 10,110 youths

Building Teams for the New Era

As organizations strive to create high-performing teams, the focus must shift toward fostering self-awareness and emotional intelligence. Here’s how leaders can embrace this shift:

  1. Cultivate Self-Awareness: Invest in workshops and programs that help employees understand their strengths, values, and working styles. Tools like Insights Discovery, which we use at Victus People , are excellent frameworks to help teams appreciate their differences and find harmony.
  2. Focus on Growth Opportunities: Create pathways for professional and personal growth. This generation thrives when they see a future of learning and development within your organization.
  3. Prioritize Well-Being: Flexibility, mental health resources, and open communication are no longer optional. A culture of care is essential to attract and retain top talent.
  4. Redefine Success: Shift the narrative from just delivering KPIs to building a workplace where employees feel valued, seen, and heard.

Preparing for the New Generation

To truly prepare for this new wave of talent, organizations must go beyond simply acknowledging these shifts, they need to actively design environments that empower young professionals. According to the YMCA’s Crisis of Opportunity report, young people are seeking workplaces that offer supportive leadership, meaningful mentorship, and a sense of belonging. Leaders should focus on fostering collaboration across all levels, encouraging creative thinking, and creating safe spaces where employees can express themselves without fear of judgment.

Moreover, providing opportunities for upskilling and reskilling is vital, as many young workers feel unprepared for the rapidly changing job landscape. By investing in their development and co-creating solutions with them, organizations can ensure their teams are not only productive but also deeply engaged and motivated to contribute.

As we navigate these changes, let us remember that creating a thriving workplace starts with understanding, supporting, and preparing for the unique needs of this generation. Together, we can build environments where everyone can succeed.

Feedback

Here is what the regional director’s team members said about the workshop;

“Good to help to deeply think about myself, inspiring.”

“This workshop has given me a great opportunity to understand our team—truly grateful for the experience.”

It’s moments like these that remind us why we do what we do. Helping teams discover a deeper understanding of themselves and each other is at the heart of transformation.
